Holy Trinity Newsletter

19 September 2004

A warm welcome to all today especially if you are a visitor. We trust you enjoy your stay in Brussels and your worship with us today. Please join us after the morning service for coffee and drinks down in the Hall. You are most welcome to stay around and talk. If you are new please make yourself known especially to the clergy; we would be grateful if you would fill in a card at the Welcome Table.

A fully staffed crèche for babies up to 2 years old, is available during the 10.30 service in the Charles Le Jeune Centre. If you would like to make use of it, an usher will show you where it is located.

Today is Mission Sunday The Mission Focus for September is Muyebe School for Girls, Uganda.  Muyebe celebrates its thirtieth anniversary this year. The school has developed much over the years and now takes girls up to ‘A’ level (baccalaureat). Holy Trinity’s rôle is chiefly devoted to an Assistance Fund to provide school fees for pupils in difficulty.

The loose plate collections at all 4 services today will go towards Muyebe. If you are unable to attend church today, you are also welcome to support Muyebe by placing your gift in an envelope, clearly marked ‘Muyebe’, on 26 September.

CHAPLAIN’S NOTES

Beslan It was generally considered that we had a very worthwhile meeting last Monday when 13 of us reflected on the outrage at Beslan. We shared Scripture and prayed that God would bring good out of evil. Reflecting on Hosea’s shattering experience (Hosea 1-3) with his wayward wife we drew comfort from God’s promise that he would make the Valley of Achor (the place where Achan was stoned following his sin at Jericho – Joshua 7) ‘a door of hope’. This led us to pray that, just as God would bring good out of evil at Achor, there might also be revival in Beslan and throughout the Caucasus through this terrible event. Vladimir Hankishiev told us of the pastor who lost six of his eight children. This surely concentrated our minds! I was reminded of the hymn written by the American hymn-writer Horatio G Spafford following the drowning of his three daughters: ‘When peace like a river attendeth my way,/ when sorrows like sea-billows roll,/ whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say,/ “It is well, it is well with my soul”’. We agreed to continue to pray for Beslan.

Harvest will be celebrated this year on Sunday 26 September. Helpers would be most welcome to decorate the church on Friday 24, morning from 10am. Please bring tinned or long-lasting packaged goods for Harvest. These will then go to the Protestant Social Centre. There will be a retiring collection for Tear Fund (featured in the Service) after the 10.30 service.

Skip Council have agreed to remove all the rubbish from the garden on 24/25 September and need help with the removal of all the mess from 18.30 on Friday and 9.00 on Saturday. We request the help of as many members of the congregation as possible for this VERY worthwhile job!

We also need to set up the tables which are still stored but at present trapped by the old Communion railings.

Prayer meeting The Council Prayer meeting is on Monday night. Council urges the congregation to gather with us in prayer. Ch Le Jeune Centre 20.00 (finish 21.30).

A kind of Borzée in Brussels: Saturday 9 October 10.00 – 14.30 This year we have invited Chris Byworth to come and give us two very interesting fully illustrated lectures, first on Genesis 1-11 and then, in the second half of the morning, on the Life of Christ. Both are fully illustrated. This will be a most interesting morning. The price, including lunch, will be approximately €10 per head. Bookings commence this weekend. During my time at The London College of Divinity, Chris was undoubtedly the outstanding student and subsequently embraced a broad ministry which included both pastoral ministry as well as being Warden of Cranmer Hall, Durham. He has paid many visits to the Middle East and mastered his understanding of Mesopotamian civilization. I have heard him before and thoroughly recommend what could be a most interesting and worthwhile morning. Don’t miss it!

INFORMATION

Cleaning Thank you for your response to last week’s appeal. However we’re not there yet! Due to the fact that the Council did not feel it right to spend at least €20,000 per annum on cleaning, the church has now arranged for a new cleaning system which requires the active help of at least some members of the congregation. We are most grateful to Dora for heading up our church cleaning team and those students who will assist her. However, please offer your help to Dora on at least an occasional basis so that our renovated buildings can remain a church centre that we can always be proud of.

The Bar reopened on 12 September, for the greatest pleasure of many. However, to keep this functioning, Johan Depypere still needs willing hands to help tend, keep and serve. If you are a volunteer for this attractively convivial job, please contact Vicki at Church Office on 02 511 71 83 or Johan after the 10.30 service. Thank you!

Help! 2 more hosts needed! On 3 October 8 people are coming from Liverpool to the 10.30 service. They want to learn about Anglicans in Brussels. The service will tell them a lot but lunch afterwards with members of the congregation would probably inform them even more. Can you take a Liverpudlian or two to lunch on that day? Please contact Paulina on 02/375 23 20 or cancerhelp@tiscali.be

Archdeacon's retirement gift  As some of you will already know, the Archdeacon of North-West Europe, The Venerable Geoffrey Allen, is due to retire very shortly. The Archdeaconry is making a collection for him and, if you would like to contribute, you are invited to leave a donation with the ushers at the end of the service.

Accommodation for a few nights is being sought by a visitor from Kinshasa, DRC. If you think you could help, please contact Simon Robbins either by phone (at the Church Office or on 02/640 6646), or simon.robbins@skynet.be .

The Prayer Chain welcomes requests for prayer for any situation with complete
confidentiality. Please pass your request to Sue Cox 02/767 29 11 or cottoncox@hotmail.com or to Ann Milton 02/772 47 04.
